Grandma Always Said

Her little rebukes, her caressing hands, Grandma has always been there for me…always

A piece by Blue

Grandma always said that I had a wild imagination
How else would you soothe
A four-year old sitting silent
On his bed cradling the two broken
Pieces of his favourite toy he kept
On saying that his elder brother broke
As an act of establishing supremacy?

Grandma always said that I had a wild imagination,
When I raised a question of my mother’s
Bruises when I was supposed
To know that she only met with
An accident. Was it only
My room that heard her screams
From downstairs?

Grandma always said that I had a wild imagination
When I came running back home
One day to tell people about snakes
In our backyard only to find
Clear days and a few feathers
On the ground.

Grandma always said that I had a wild imagination.
Because mother had only puked the leftovers
In her stomach and not blood.
She was only going for a routine
Check up at the doctor’s.

Grandma always did say that I had a wild imagination.
Because I always used to look for monsters
Beneath my bed and instead of being scared,
I would tell them to not be afraid of me.

Grandma always said that I had a wild imagination
And I guess that she was right
Because she died 25 years ago.
I turn 21, tonight.
